Classification and name of golf clubs

When preparing our game kit we have to take into account two fundamental things:

  • The regulations allow us to carry a maximum of 14 clubs in the golf bag.
  • The correct choice of golf clubs: There is a wide range of golf clubs, differentiated according to the material they are made of and the type of game they provide.

Below we are going to explain the different types of golf clubs that exist so that you can choose the most suitable set of irons for your game.

Types of golf clubs:

  1. Woods: for long shots.
  2. Irons: For intermediate shots, approach shots and delicate shots.
  3. Hybrids: mix of woods and irons.
  4. Putter: to put the ball in the hole once the green has been reached.

Woods:

They are the golf clubs that are used to hit long distances and great power, such as leaving the Tee . Despite the name, they are composed of steel or titanium.

They are classified into two categories:

  • Driver or wood 1: this golf club allows the player to achieve long strokes, with the greatest possible power. Drivers are the most expensive and most difficult type of golf club to use.
  • Fairway woods: set of woods numbered from 2 to 11. They are used for long shots.

Irons:

It is the ideal stick for medium distances. They are designed to achieve greater control of the ball.

They are classified in:

  • Numbered irons: They are numbered from 1 to 9 based on the loft angle, this number determines the height and distance of the ball's trajectory. The higher the suit number, the higher the l oft. The loft ranges from 14° in the 1-iron to 41° in the 9-iron. They are mainly used on approach shots for distances between 100 and 180 meters.
  • Wedges: These are irons with a higher loft angle than numbered irons and are usually marked with a letter that represents their name. Wedge loft ranges from 45° for the pticing wedge to 64° for the ultra lob wedge . They are used for shots that require little distance, a lot of height, a high angle of elevation and little displacement of the ball after landing.

Hybrid:

This type of golf club is the combination between woods and irons. It is characterized by being a light golf club that allows you to reach long distances . They generally replace 1-5 long irons and 3-11 fairway woods.

Putter:

The putter is the golf club used on the green to put the ball into the hole, and it is probably the most personal golf club and offers the most variety in terms of design, material, shape, style, weight, length and grip .
